EVALUATING THE TENSILE STRENGTH OF REINFORCEMENT BARS IN ZAMFARA LOCAL MARKET
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study evaluates the tensile strength of reinforcement bars (10mm, 12mm, and 16mm diameters) sourced from local markets in Kaura Namoda and Gusau, Zamfara State, Nigeria, to assess compliance with the Nigerian Industrial Standard (NIS 117:2004). Using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM), 18 samples were tested for yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation. Results revealed significant disparities: Gusau market samples consistently outperformed Kaura Namoda, with 16mm bars achieving tensile strengths of 597–622 N/mm² (Gusau) versus 423–498 N/mm² (Kaura Namoda). Alarmingly, Kaura Namoda’s 10mm bars failed testing entirely, indicating substandard quality. Only 12mm and 16mm bars from Gusau met NIS thresholds (≥400 MPa), while Kaura Namoda’s 12mm bars marginally complied. The study highlights critical risks posed by non-compliant rebars to structural integrity and recommends mandatory certification, market surveillance, and stakeholder education to enforce quality standards. These findings contribute to safer construction practices and policy reform in Nigeria’s building materials sector.
