ARTHROPOD DIVERSITY WITHIN KASHIM IBRAHIM UNIVERSITY
Abstract
This study investigates arthropod diversity within Kashim Ibrahim University, across four habitat types – main gate to library/medical center, residential area, block one to five, and hostel area Maiduguri, Nigeria. Forceps or Tweezers were used, a total of 1,243 individuals representing five classes and 13 orders were collected. Result indicate that the main gate to library/medical center exhibit the highest diversity (H=0.33%), while block one to five recorded the lowest (H=0.07%). Hymenoptera and Orthoptera were the dominant taxa across all habitats. Environmental factors such as vegetation complexity, temperature and humidity strongly influenced species abundance and distribution. The study emphasizes the importance of habitat conservation and sustainable agricultural practice to maintain arthropod biodiversity and ecosystem stability. This project explores the diversity of arthropods within Kashim Ibrahim University, with the dual aims of characterizing species richness, taxonomic composition and functional group structure of the arthropod assemblages, and elucidating how environmental variables such as habitat heterogeneity, vegetation structure, land use intensity and landscape configuration influence arthropod diversity and community composition.
