Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the nature and impact of political participation on democratic governance in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, with a focused examination of Edo State. Political participation, as a cornerstone of democratic systems, involves the active engagement of citizens in processes such as voting, public debates, party membership, policy advocacy, and electoral oversight. Despite Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999, political participation has remained limited, uneven, and deeply influenced by socio-economic disparities, elite dominance, and institutional weaknesses. Using a qualitative methodology grounded in literature-based analysis, this research explores the historical development of Nigeria’s democracy, identifies the major factors influencing political participation in Edo State, and analyzes how such participation or its absence affects democratic consolidation. The study adopts the Participatory Democratic Theory and Elite Theory as its theoretical frameworks to understand the underlying structures of inclusion and exclusion in the political process. Findings reveal that challenges such as electoral malpractice, political violence, voter apathy, and godfatherism have hindered meaningful participation, particularly among youth, women, and economically disadvantaged groups. However, where participation has been active through civil society, media engagement, and digital activism there have been notable improvements in government responsiveness and institutional accountability. The study concludes that while democratic processes exist in structure, their functionality depends largely on citizen involvement. Recommendations include strengthening electoral reforms, promoting civic education, ensuring inclusivity in party structures, and empowering marginalized groups to participate fully in governance. The research underscores the need for sustained institutional and cultural transformation to deepen democratic practices in Edo State and Nigeria at large.
