EXTRACTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF NATURAL DYES FROM NEEM LEAVES AND AWA FRUITS
Abstract
This study presents the extraction and characterisation of natural dyes extract from Awa fruit and neem leaves; aiming to identify their bioactive compounding potential applications in textile industries using various standard phytochemical test; the extracts were analysed for carbohydrates, proteins, oils, saponins, tannin, flavonoid, alkaloids, steroids, teroenoids, phenoms and phlobatannins. The results revealed that both extracts contain significant levels of tannins, saponins, phenols and oils with Awa fruit showing higher concentration of flavonoids while neem leaves are rich in teroenoids and alkaloids. The extracts were characterised by FTIR spectrometer to reveal the functional groups present in both extra. The extracts were further used to dye white cotton fabric. The dyed sample were characterised for their colour, wash and light vastness properties. The dyed samples show moderate to good washing and light vastness. The white cotton fabric treated with neem extract exhibits yellowish green colour while the one treated with Awa extract shows light brown colour. The finding suggests that both plants extract have strong potential for use in textile, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. Further research is recommended to explore specific bioactive properties for commercial and therapeutic applications.
