DIFFERENT METHODS OF TEACHING AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN GIREI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ADAMAWA STATE
Abstract
Agriculture plays an important role in the economic development of Nigeria. It provides food, employment, raw materials for industries, and income for farmers. Because of its importance, Agricultural Science is taught in secondary schools to equip students with knowledge and practical skills related to crop production, animal husbandry, soil management, and agricultural economics.
In Nigerian secondary schools, Agricultural Science is taught to encourage students to develop practical skills, appreciate the dignity of labour, and become self‑reliant in food production. It also helps students understand biological processes involved in farming and contribute to national food security.
However, effective teaching of Agricultural Science requires the use of appropriate teaching methods. Teaching methods refer to the strategies or techniques used by teachers to deliver lessons and help students understand subject matter. Some commonly used teaching methods in Agricultural Science include demonstration, discussion, discovery, laboratory, project, and field trip methods.
In many secondary schools, Agricultural Science is often taught using teacher‑centered approaches that limit student participation and practical experience. This affects students’ interest and performance in the subject. Therefore, it is important to examine different methods used in teaching Agricultural Science in secondary schools, particularly in Girei Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
