Abstract

ABSTRACT This research investigates the corrosion inhibition potential of expired metronidazole drug on mild steel in 1.5 M HCl solution using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis. The inhibition efficiency (IE%) of expired metronidazole at 500 ppm was found to be 92.1±8%, indicating its significant potential as a corrosion inhibitor. The adsorption behavior of expired metronidazole on the mild steel surface in acidic environments was examined, and the corrosion inhibition mechanism was elucidated based on EIS data and surface analysis. The influence of temperature and concentration on the corrosion inhibition efficiency of expired metronidazole was assessed, and its performance was compared with other commonly used corrosion inhibitors for mild steel in acidic environments. Results demonstrated that expired metronidazole exhibited remarkable corrosion inhibition efficiency, suggesting its potential as an eco-friendly and cost-effective alternative to conventional corrosion inhibitors.
