Abstract

ABSTRACT Formaldehyde is extensively utilised in industrial and laboratory settings for the production ofresins, disinfectants, and preservatives. This study aimed to investigate the erythrocytic changesin Wistar rats exposed to formaldehyde. Initially, four groups of three animals each were used todeterminetheLethalDose(LD)50.Followingthis,41ratswereavailableforthemainexperiment.These rats were divided into six groups, with the control group comprising six rats and the testgroups comprising seven rats each. The control group (Group 1) received only food and waterthroughout the experimental period. Groups 2 to 6 were exposed to 10% formaldehyde fordurations ranging from 5 to 25 minutes (Group 2: 5 minutes, Group 3: 10 minutes, Group 4: 15minutes, Group 5: 20 minutes, Group 6: 25 minutes) in addition to food and water for 14 days.PCV was measured using the microhematocrit method, and haemoglobin concentration wasestimated using the cyanmethemoglobin method. Data were analysed using SPSS version 29 forWindows. The results indicate that exposure to 10% formaldehyde has a significant, duration-dependent impact on the haematological parameters of rats. Specifically, both the packed cellvolume(PCV)andhaemoglobin(Hb)concentrationsdecreasedprogressivelywithlongerexposure times. The control group exhibited a PCV of 51.050±0.1871% and an Hb concentrationof17.950±0.1871g/dl.Incontrast,after25minutesofexposure,thePCVdroppedto40.471±0.1113% and the Hb concentration fell to 12.829±0.0756 g/dl, with all changes beingstatisticallysignificant(p
