Abstract

ABSTRACT Background and aim: Urinary creatinine concentration is an index of renal health. In spite of studies done on urinary creatinine level, studies are however sparse on the concentration of urinary creatinine in apparently healthy population. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate urinary creatinine level in undergraduate students of Edo State University Uzairue, Edo State. Materials and methods: Fifty apparently healthy undergraduate students comprising 24 males and 26 females aged 15-24 years old were involved in this study. They were randomly recruited after obtaining written informed consent from them. Anthropometric indices such as body weight, height, waist and hip circumferences were determined, while body mass index was calculated. Blood and pulse pressures were also determined. 10 ml of early morning urine was obtained from each participant for the determination of creatinine by spectrophotometric method. Data obtained were analyzed using SPSS and p was considered significant at less than 0.05 Results: male participants were significantly older than female participants. There was no difference in the urinary creatinine and other parameters. Furthermore, urinary creatinine correlated positively with BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference and pulse pressure non- significantly. Conclusion: The non-significant difference in creatinine level in the study population could be due to their apparently healthy status and relatively small sample size. This require further studies Keywords: urinary creatinine, waist circumference, BMI, Blood pressure, Hip circumference
