THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IN IYAMHO, EDO STATE; 2000-2020
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The contributions made by women to community development in Iyamho, Edo State, between 2000 and 2020 are examined in this study. In addition to their traditional roles in farming and household care, it documents their growing involvement in sanitation, cooperative savings, education support, and grassroots projects using oral interviews as the primary source of evidence. The study tackles the issue of women’s contributions being frequently disregarded in narratives about community development, which frequently place an emphasis on activities that are male-centered or formal leadership. This study closes a gap in the literature by emphasizing the crucial but unofficial roles played by women at the grassroots level through its focus on oral testimonies. The results demonstrate that women have played a crucial role in Iyamho’s social and economic development, despite their lack of official recognition. According to the study, rural women’s empowerment is essential for inclusive and sustainable development.
