PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING, PROXIMATE AND MINERAL ANALYSIS OF PSIDIUM GUAJAVA.L (GUAVA LEAVES)
Abstract
Psidium guajava .L (gauva leaves) have been used to treat diseases like upset stomachs and diarrhea to diabetes and infections etc. This research aimed to provide , laboratory evidence to explain why this leaves is so powerful. To do this, I conducted a comprehensive laboratory investigation on guava leaves collected from plateau State,Nigeria. focusing on three key areas: First, we performed a phytochemical screening to hunt for the leaves hidden medicinal compounds. The tests confirmed that the leaves are packed with valuable compounds like tannins, flavonoids, saponins, terpenoids and alkaloids These are the substances known to reduce inflammation, fight off harmful bacteria, and act as powerful antioxidants that protect our cells from damage. This finding directly explains the leaves traditional use for soothing infections and internal inflammation. The proximate analysis to understand the basic nutritional building blocks of the leaves. This revealed that the leaves is not a significant source of Fats (2.33%), Protein (2.45%), Fiber (20.70%), Carbohydrates(63.47%), Ash(2.65%), Moisture(8.4%).The standout feature is an exceptionally high fiber content. This is a crucial discovery, as it provides the scientific basis for the leaves most famous use: as a digestive aid. High dietary fiber is essential for gut health, regulating blood sugar, and managing cholesterol levels. The analysis also showed the leaves were well-dried and stable, meaning they can be stored and used effectively in teas and powders. Finally, the mineral content contains essential nutrients the leaves provide. We found that they are a good source of important minerals, particularly potassium, which is vital for maintaining heart health and healthy blood pressure. The leaves also contained useful amounts of iron, magnesium, zinc, and copper, which support everything from a strong immune system to efficient wound healing. In conclusion, this study successfully bridges the gap between traditional wisdom and modern science. We have confirmed that the guava leaf is a potent natural medicine. Its power comes from a powerful combination of bioactive compounds, exceptional fiber content, and beneficial minerals. These results strongly validate its traditional uses and position it as a promising, natural ingredient for future health products aimed at improving digestive wellness, managing diabetes, and boosting overall health. This isn't just an old wives' tale; it's a scientifically-backed fact.
