Abstract

Abstract This comprehensive study investigates the perceptions of school counselors regarding the effectiveness of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) in addressing drug abuse among secondary school students in Ika South Local Government, Delta State. A descriptive survey design was employed, and a sample of 50 practicing guidance counselors was drawn using a purposive sampling technique. The study utilized a researcher-developed questionnaire, "Counselors' Perception of REBT on Drug Abuse Questionnaire," with a reliability coefficient of 0.824, indicating internal consistency. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (t-test and analysis of variance). The findings revealed that counselors perceive REBT as an effective intervention for drug abuse, particularly in modifying irrational beliefs and promoting healthy decision-making. Notably, the study found no significant difference in counselors' perception of REBT effectiveness based on demographics such as gender, years of experience, level of educational qualification, and years of application. The study's results have significant implications for school counseling practices, suggesting that REBT can be a valuable tool for counselors in addressing drug abuse among students. Based on the findings, it is recommended that REBT be widely adopted in schools, integrated into existing counseling programs, and that counselors be encouraged to apply REBT regardless of experience. Additionally, further research on REBT's effectiveness in other areas of student support is warranted. This study contributes to the growing body of evidence supporting the efficacy of REBT in promoting students' mental health and well-being. The findings and recommendations of this study can inform policy and practice in school counseling, ultimately enhancing support services for students struggling with substance abuse. By adopting REBT, schools can provide students with effective support in managing substance abuse and related issues, promoting healthy decision-making and rational thinking. This study's results can also inform the development of REBT training programs for counselors, ensuring that they are equipped to effectively apply REBT in their practice. Ultimately, this study aims to contribute to the development of evidence-based practices in school counseling, enhancing the well-being and academic success of secondary school students.
