A HISTORY OF IDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT, IDO, IBADAN, 1989 - 2021
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study explores the historical development and impact of Ido Local Government Area in Oyo State from 1989 to 2021, with a focus on its administrative evolution, grassroots governance, and socio-economic contributions. It traces the creation of Ido Local government Area as part of Nigeria’s decentralization reforms aimed at bringing government closer to the people and improving service delivery at the local level. Using Ido Local Government Area, the study highlights its transformation through phases of demographic expansion, infrastructural growth, and economic diversification, particularly in agriculture, education, and healthcare.
The study draws from both primary sources, such as oral interviews with community leaders and government officials, and secondary sources including academic texts, journals, and government reports. It reveals that while Ido Local Government Area made measurable progress in areas such as internally generated revenue, market development, and access to public services, it continued to face challenges including financial dependency, political interference, weak civic participation, and environmental constraints. The research concludes that for sustainable development to be achieved at the grassroots, there is a need for greater administrative autonomy, institutional accountability, and the reintegration of traditional leadership structures into the local governance framework.
