EFFECTS OF ETHANOLIC LEAF EXTRACT OF CRASSULACEA AND BISOPROLOL ON ANTIOXIDANT BIOMARKERS IN LEAD ACETATE-INDUCED CARDIAC TOXICITY.
Abstract
This study investigates the effects of ethanolic leaf extract of Crassulacea and bisoprolol on
antioxidant biomarkers in lead acetate-induced toxicity in Wistar rats. The research involved 28
rats, which were acclimatized and divided into four groups: control, lead-treated, lead +
Crassulacea, and lead + bisoprolol. The ethanolic extract was prepared from fresh Crassulacea
leaves, yielding approximately 5.3%. Doxorubicin was used to induce cardiac toxicity, followed
by oral administration of the extract and bisoprolol. The treatment duration was 28 days. Blood
samples were collected for serum analysis of antioxidant biomarkers: Superoxide Dismutase
(SOD), Glutathione Peroxidase (GPx), Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAC), and Malondialdehyde
(MDA). The serum SOD levels showed significant increases in the Crassulacea and bisoprolol
groups compared to the lead-only group (271±3.2 and 251±7.2 vs. 59±2.4, p
