Abstract

This study examines the impact of local government policies on community development, using Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State as a case study. The research aimed to assess how local government decisions affect the socio-economic growth of communities such as Owa-Oyibu, Umunede, and Owa-Alero. The study adopted a descriptive survey design, utilizing structured questionnaires to collect data from residents within selected towns. A total of 90% of distributed questionnaires were retrieved and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Findings revealed that while some policies, such as rural electrification, skill acquisition programs, and healthcare outreach, had positive impacts on community development, challenges such as poor implementation, lack of accountability, and insufficient funding hindered overall effectiveness. The study concludes that for sustainable development to be achieved, local government authorities must involve community members in policy planning and ensure transparency in execution. Recommendations include enhanced citizen participation, periodic policy review, and improved resource allocation for grassroots development initiatives.
