MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE AMONG ORON PEOPLE: A SOCIO-CULTURAL APPRAISAL
Abstract
Marriage and divorce are universal human experiences that vary across cultures and societies. Among the people of Oron in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, marriage and divorce are influenced by a complex interplay of socio-cultural factors. This study examines the dynamics of marriage and divorce among the Oron people, with a focus on the socio-cultural factors that shape these experiences. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining both primary and secondary data. Primary data were collected through oral interviews with elders, married couples, and divorced individuals in Oron community, who shared their experiences and perspectives on marriage and divorce. Secondary data were obtained from existing literature on marriage and divorce, including books, journals, and online resources. The study found that marriage and divorce among the Oron people are shaped by a range of socio-cultural factors, including cultural norms and values, economic pressures, and changing gender roles. The study also found that divorce is often stigmatized, and that women are disproportionately affected by marital instability. The study recommends culturally sensitive counseling and support services for couples experiencing marital difficulties, promoting economic empowerment and financial literacy among women, and community-based initiatives to promote positive cultural values and attitudes towards marriage and family. The study recommends among others that policymakers develop and implement policies that promote healthy and stable marriages and families in Oron community, and provide support for community-based initiatives that aim to strengthen marriages and families.
