Abstract

The effect of combine fermented and boiled cassava peel supplemented diet on kidney histochemistry of broiler chicken. Fresh cassava peels were washed and soaked for seven (7) days in cold water and allowed to ferment, the peels were washed and boiled in clean water (1:3, W/V) for 30 minutes in a closed water pot. After boiling, the peels were removed, drained and sun dried for seven (7) days The processed peels were then grounded into semi-powdery form and stored which was used to feed the animals. Thirty broilers (30) were divided into three (3) dietary treatment groups (A-C), using a randomized design and fed for six (6) weeks as follows: GROUP A Control diet (0% fermented and boiled cassava meal) GROUP B: 30% fermented and boiled cassava meal GROUP C: 60% fermented and boiled cassava meal. After six weeks of feeding the animals were sacrificed and the lungs were collected for histological examination. The result showed that the kidney of chickens fed 0% of FBCP supplemented diet showed well organized and visible tissue morphology consisting of cortical tubules (CT) epithelial cells with glomerulus (G) in Bowman’s Capsule. In the chickens fed 30% FBCP, the normal kidney morphology was retained. However, the examination of many chicken tissues revealed slight tubular brush-border loss (TBL) and aggregation of inflammatory cells (IC). Chickens fed 60% FBCP supplemented diet exhibits disorganized morphology, moderate tubular brush-border loss (TBL), necrosis of glomerulus (NG), congestion of tubular cells (CTC) and aggregation of inflammatory cell (IC). The data suggests that the inclusion of fermented and boiled cassava peel less than 60% may not adversely affect the kidney histology and therefore maybe considered as an important ingredient for poultry feed formulation.
