PHYSIOCHEMICAL AND MICROBIOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF BORE-HOLE WATER AND SACHET WATER UTILIZED IN AMAI, DELTA STATE
Abstract
Access to safe drinking water is essential for human health and well-being. Microbiological and physiochemical properties of borehole water and sachet water was determined. Water quality assessment analysis were conducted on two bore hole water and two sachet water samples, consumed by persons living at Amai in Delta State, Nigeria. Physicochemical parameters such as pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Suspended Solids (TSS), chloride, calcium ad phosphate were investigated on two borehole water used for drinking and other domestic purposes and two sachet water. pH and TDS of the sample were analyzed with bench top pH meter and TDS meter, Calcium and chloride analyzed by titrimetric method. The physical parameters of the water sample assessed shows significant variations as the water sample. The pH of all the samples collected were within the recommended pH (7) by WHO drinking water quality standard. Microbiological assessments shows the presence of Chromobacterium violaceum, Salmonella ad Escherichia coli. Microbiological findings occasionally detected coliform presence, highlighting the need for periodic monitoring and maintenance of borehole infrastructure. Access to safe drinking water is crucial for public health, particularly in rural communities like Amai, Nigeria.
