Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the Influence of Chucky horror movies on the social behaviour and mental health of students at Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu. Using a survey research design, data was gathered from 328 undergraduates through structured questionnaires. The objectives were to assess the level of exposure to Chucky films, students' attitudes towards the series, its influence on their social behaviour and the mental health challenges it poses. The findings indicate that a significant majority of students are highly exposed to Chucky films, with 62.1% regularly watching them and 77.7% having seen advertisements. Students generally have a positive attitude towards the series, with 68.4% enjoying the films and 74.6% finding them entertaining. However, the influence on social behaviour is mixed with 49.7% noticing changes in their behavior and 45.9% not perceiving any change. Furthermore, 52.8% of students reported feeling anxious, 46.6% experienced trouble sleeping, 52.8% had nightmares, and 55.9% felt stressed after watching the films. The study concludes that while the Chucky series has a significant presence and generally positive reception among students, it also possesses notable mental health challenges. Recommendations include implementing media literacy programs, offering alternativeentertainment options and much more.
