THE ROLE OF MEDIATION IN CONFLICT RESOLUTION, A STUDY OF GOVERNANCE IN RIVER STATE (2019-2023)
Abstract
This study investigates the role of mediation in conflict resolution within the governance structure of Rivers State, Nigeria, from 2019 to 2023. It explores the effectiveness, impact, and limitations of mediation in addressing governance-related conflicts, particularly those arising from political disputes, community unrest, and institutional power struggles. Using a qualitative research design and a purposive sampling technique, data were collected through interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis from 300 stakeholders including government officials, traditional rulers, civil society representatives, and community leaders. Findings reveal that mediation has played a significant role in promoting dialogue, trust-building, and peaceful coexistence among conflicting parties. Participants reported that mediation fosters constructive negotiation and offers a platform for addressing underlying causes of conflict, thereby contributing to governance stability and peacebuilding. However, the study also identifies notable challenges such as lack of trust, power imbalances, limited resources, and enforcement difficulties that hinder mediation effectiveness. The study concludes that while mediation is not a panacea, it remains a vital tool in conflict resolution and governance reform when supported by institutional frameworks, trained personnel, and stakeholder commitment. It recommends greater investment in mediation training, institutional support, and inclusive approaches to enhance sustainable peace and good governance in Rivers State and beyond.
