Abstract

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the global labour market, presenting both opportunities and challenges, particularly in developing economies like Nigeria. This study investigates the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on labour rights and job security in Nigeria. It explores AI's influence on the labour market from a global and historical perspective, assesses Nigeria's legal and institutional frameworks in response to AI's integration, and analyses the effects of AI on labour rights and job security. The research aims to contribute to academic discourse, shape policy development, and guide practical implementation in ensuring that the advent of AI technology in Nigeria is met with preparedness and foresight, protecting and advancing labour rights and job security. The research methodology relies on both primary sources, such as the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Labour Act, as well as secondary sources including Books, Journal-Articles, and Internet Materials. The findings suggest that while AI promises to revolutionise work dynamics and bolster efficiency, its rapid proliferation poses challenges to job security and labour rights in Nigeria, particularly in a developing context characterised by unstable employment conditions. The current legal frameworks exhibit inadequacies in adapting to the rapid technological advancements of AI, creating a significant protection void for workers' rights. The study proposes strategies to mitigate the risks associated with AI's pervasive integration and harmonise its progression with the reinforcement of labour rights and job security in Nigeria.
