EFFECT OF AQUEOUS EXTRACT OF LAUNAEA TARAXACIFOLIA ON OXIDATIVE STRESS IN HEPATIC AND RENAL TISSUES TREATED WITH SODIUM NITROPRUSSIDE
Abstract
Oxidative stress, resulting from an imbalance between reactive species and antioxidant defenses, is a central factor in liver and kidney damage. Sodium nitroprusside, a vasodilator may amplify reactive nitrogen species formation and precipitate oxidative injury. This study assessed the antioxidant efficacy of aqueous Launaea taraxacifolia extract in hepatic and renal tissues challenged with sodium nitroprusside, using lipid peroxidation, nitric oxide, and reduced glutathione assays across concentrations from 25 to 100 mg/mL.Four healthy male Wistar rats (120-140) g were obtained from the Department of Physiology animal holding facility, University of Ibadan. The animals were acclimatized for 2 weeks before used for the experiment. They were given standard pellet diet and water ad libitum. This protocol was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology. The result shows that the percentage inhibition of oxidative stress biomarkers increased with increase in concentration of the aqueous extract of Launaea taraxacifolia with a significant difference at p
