Abstract

This research is centered on the development of dual-power heat treatment furnace using locally sourced materials. The development philosophy is to have a dual power source, that is electricity and fuel(Charcoal) due to irregular electrical power supply to energize the furnace. Design drawings were produced and 47 × 47mm square pipe iron, 1.2mm metal sheet was used for the fabrication of the furnace casing. The furnace was assembled by lining the lagging made from the mixture of sand, cement, gravel and water, where the electric element was placed and assemble together, and electrical components (circuit breaker, switch, light indicator) were positioned. Testing was performed to evaluate the performance of the furnace. It was observed that the furnace has a fast heating rate as the result of airflow from the blower to the charcoal brazier. It was also observed the electric heating element has a minimum temperature of 260°C within 12 minutes if the composite power source is 220V-240V. It was also observed that the furnace has good heat retaining capacity
