EVALUTION OF PESTICIDE RESIDUE ON FISHE SOLD AT MARKET PLACES IN BAYELSA STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
This study examines Evalution Of Pesticide Residue On Fishes Sold At Market Places In Bayelsa State, Bayelsa State, Nigeria.Fish sampling collected from the designated markets over a period of three months, with visits conducted monthly. The analyzed heavy metals are: Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Mercury (Hg), Arsenic (As), Chromium (Cr), Nickel (Ni), Zinc (Zn), and Copper (Cu).Lead levels ranged from 0.019 to 0.025 mg/kg with standard errors (0.002 to 0.003), also below the permissible limit of 0.3 mg/kg.. The significant difference (p = 0.03) between dried and smoked fish indicates that the smoking procedure increases mercury levels. The results suggest that although the fish are generally suitable for eating, however, the smoking procedure can elevate the levels of specific heavy metals.Researchers recommended enhanced processing techniques:Incorporating advanced processing techniques that minimize the deposition of heavy metals during smoking might effectively decrease contamination levels in smoked fish..
