Abstract

This study explores how technology development impacts human rights protection in Nigeria by analyzing digital technology effects on social media networks together with artificial intelligence technology and surveillance system utilization throughout 2019 to 2024. During the period from 2019 to 2024 digital transformation initiatives in Nigeria affected core human rights specifically regarding privacy protection and freedom of expression as well as access to information rights. The research draws its findings from secondary data in scholarly articles and policy documents and legal frameworks by employing qualitative methodology combined with human rights theoretical framework to evaluate technology-related empowering and repressive aspects. Digital platforms that empower the #EndSARS movement also pose new difficulties because governments conduct surveillance while users face insufficient data protection and widespread unmanaged misinformation. The analysis shows regulatory system deficits together with digital knowlege gaps that mainly impact marginalized population segments. The paper finishes by outlining strategic strategies for empowering digital rights through policy reform and data control improvements while launching public awareness campaigns. Digital rights research in Africa receives advancement through this study which delivers specific Nigerian knowledge about democratic digital opportunities and difficulties.
