AN ASSESSMENT OF THE INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS (A CASE STUDY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE, UNIVERSITY OF MAIDUGURI)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study examined the influence of social media on the academic performance of students in the Department of Political Science, University of Maiduguri. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. A sample of 120 respondents was drawn from the population of students in the department. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using simple percentages and frequency tables. The findings revealed that a majority of the students use social media platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook for both academic and non-academic purposes. However, the study also found that excessive time spent on these platforms often leads to distractions, resulting in a decline in academic performance. The study concludes that while social media is a useful tool for research, its unregulated use is detrimental to academic excellence. Recommendations include better time management by students and increased awareness by the university authorities.
