Abstract

ABSTRACT Superficial mycoses of the glabrous skin still remains one of the most prevalent human infections encountered in medical/clinical practice and has since been established as a public health problem in Africa in general and Nigeria in particular. The present study aimed to isolate dermatophyte from children attending pediatric unit of General Hospital Kaura Numodu The dermatological sample collections were based on a standard practical guide and atlas for the diagnosis of fungal infections. A total of 30 samples were collected Culture media was prepared. Sterile of the swab stick was gentle done on the petri dish it was then incubated to allow fungal growth The plates were monitored for any visible fungal growth. The fungal growth was placed onto a slide and flooded with lactophenol cotton blue for 5min, and examined under 10X and 40X magnification mode of identification was compared with reference imagine. Microbiological investigation revealed the presence of dermatophytic Trichophyton concentricum was the predominant isolate. It was concluded that the findings of this study affirm the well-established notion that the occurrence and causative agents of dermatophytosis are subject to multifaceted influences such as geographical location, socioeconomic status, lifestyle, and age. The high prevalence rate observed in this population, compared to other regions, emphasizes the need for tailored regional surveillance and awareness programs, particularly in areas with low socioeconomic status.
