Abstract

ABSTRACT Terrorism remains a critical security challenge in Africa, with Nigeria experiencing some of the most devastating consequences due to the insurgency of groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP. This study examines the role of the African Union (AU) in combating terrorism in Nigeria, analyzing its frameworks, strategies, and interventions. The research adopts a qualitative, case study-based methodology relying on secondary data from journals, AU communiqués, UN reports, and other relevant literature. The findings reveal that while the AU has made commendable efforts through initiatives such as the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), and intelligence-sharing frameworks, its interventions are limited by funding constraints, weak regional cooperation, and inconsistent political will among member states. The study concludes that for the AU’s counterterrorism efforts to be more effective, there must be greater regional integration, enhanced funding mechanisms, and stronger enforcement of counterterrorism norms across the continent. This research contributes to scholarly understanding of regional approaches to security and provides policy recommendations for strengthening Africa’s collective response to terrorism.
