PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITES OF CLOVES (SZYGIUM AROMATICUM) EXTRACT AGAINST NAFCILLIN-RESISTANT KLEBSIELLA SPP AND S. AUREUS.
Abstract
This study investigated the phytochemical compounds in cloves extract and their antibacterial activities against Nafcillin-resistant Klebsiella and S.aureus species. The results for phytochemical analysis of clove extract showed the presence of various biochemical compounds such as Glycosides, Steroids, Alkaloids, Tannins, Saponins, Flavonoids, Phlobattanins, and Phenols as well. Some of the constituents are present on aqueous, while some are present on methanolic solutions. All the compounds are present in aqueous form except steroids and phlobattannins, while phlobattanins was absent in both aqueous extract and methanolic extract. In the present study, clove extract showed antibacterial activity from concentration (25uL, 50 uL, 75uL, and 100uL) for the tested bacteria. Clove extract showed the maximum zone of inhibition against Nafcillin-resistant Klebsiella 20.00mm at 25uL concentration, while minimum zone of inhibition 10.00 at 75uL concentration and showed the maximum zone of inhibition against S.aureus 15.00mm at 100uL concentration, while minimum zone of inhibition 6.6 at 25uL concentration.
Therefore, the result of the study shows that clove extract contains biochemical compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, tannins, and saponins. Essential oil of clove extract can be used in the treatment of several infectious diseases caused by bacterias.
