Abstract
This study is designed to examine the causes of the declining academic performance of
students in Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo. There was a general
introduction which led to rationale of the study. Four (4) research questions were raised to
guide the study. The literatures were reviewed under the following subheadings: concept of
Academic Performance, Causes of declining of academic performance among Students, The
weakness of Education in Tertiary Institution in Nigeria, The attitude of students towards
Academic Performance, Ways to Improve Academic Performance of Higher Institution
Students. Descriptive survey research design was adopted. Population of the study
comprised seventy lecturers in Faculty of Education who were selected through simple
random sampling techniques. Findings revealed that general consensus among respondents
that poor time management and study habit, inadequate teaching methods, lack of
motivation and interest of students, peer pressure and technology and social media
addiction significantly affect students' academic performance at the institution. Moreso,
high risk of dropping out of school, substance abuse and other risky behaviours, mental and
physical health challenge, reduction of career opportunities and choice and poor
relationship with family and friends were the effects of declining academic performance of
students. Students' attitudes toward academic performance are influenced by both positive
recognition of its value and challenges related to educational resources and relevance.
Lastly, combination of parental involvement, improved facilities, financial support,
continuous assessment, and practical education can help mitigate declining academic
performance at the institution. Based on the findings, it was therefore recommended that
parents and guardians should increase their involvement in students' academic lives by
participating in school activities and maintaining regular communication with the
university; policy makers should advocate for policies that provide financial support to
students from low-income families and promote greater parental engagement in education;
University administrators should establish regular and constructive feedback mechanisms to
help students understand their academic progress and areas for improvement.
