EFFECT OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF MATURED MANGIFERA INDICA LEAVES ON ASPARTATE AMINOTRANSFERASE ACTIVITY IN PLASMA OF CCL4-INDUCED HEPATOTOXIC ALBINO RATS
Abstract
Drug-induced hepatotoxicity is a major public health issue of concern. It significantly affects the development of new pharmaceutical drugs and has led to the withdrawal of many promising pharmaceutical drugs from the pharmaceutical market. This study was undertaken to assess the hepatoprotective effect of the ethanolic leaf extract of Mangifera indica. Thirty adult wistar rats with body weight of 100-120 g were randomly assigned to six groups of five rats each (n=5). Group 1 served as normal control: Groups 2-5 were hepatotoxic groups; group 2 served as positive control; group 3-5 received 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg of Mangifera indica leaf extract, Group 6 received 200mg/kg of silymarin. At the end of the experiment, all the rats were anaesthetized and blood samples were collected by cardiac puncture for biochemical analysis. Induction of CCl4 (1.5ml/kg) caused significant increase in plasma aspartate aminotransferase activity. Treatment of CCl4-induced hepatotoxic rats with the extract caused a significant (P
