AN ASSESSMENT OF LOGICAL POSITIVISTS’ METHODOLOGY OF SCIENCE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
The study entitled An Assessment of the Logical Positivists’ Methodology of Science is an attempt to critically examine the principle and implications of logical positivism in the Philosophy of science. The Logical positivists in their bid to contribute to the problem of demarcation between Science and Non-science maintains that for any proposition to be scientific, such proposition most be empirically verifiable. Hence they formulated the principle of verification as a Method through which they determined the Meaningfulness of propositions. How did the Logical Positivists arrive at their Verification principle? How empirically verifiable is the principle itself? What is the strength and weaknesses of the principle? What were the objectives of the principle? What are the implications of their method for metaphysics, ethics, and religion? To address the above problems, the work employs the expository, critical and analytical methods of Philosophy. The researcher beliefs though the Logical Positivists have contributed enormously to modern Science, their method is not sacrosanct.
