AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE CAUSES OF FIRE AND PREVENTION MEASURES IN SOME COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS: A CASE STUDY OF BAUCHI/JOS METROPOLIS
Abstract
Abstract
Fire outbreaks in commercial buildings constitute a major threat to lives, property, and economic activities. This study investigates the causes of fire incidents and the prevention measures adopted in selected commercial buildings within the Bauchi/Jos metropolis. The research employed a survey research design using questionnaires and field observations to obtain data from building occupants, shop owners, and facility managers. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. Findings reveal that the most common causes of fire outbreaks include electrical faults, improper handling of flammable materials, negligence, and lack of maintenance of electrical installations. The study also found that many commercial buildings lack adequate fire safety facilities such as fire extinguishers, alarm systems, and emergency exits. The research concludes that improved fire safety awareness, regular inspection of electrical systems, and proper installation of firefighting equipment are essential for reducing fire incidents in commercial buildings. The study recommends stronger enforcement of building regulations, improved fire safety training, and regular safety inspections.
