DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A DIGITAL THREE PHASE INDUCTION MOTOR TRAINER
Abstract
ABSTRACT
In this project a three Phase Induction Motor trainer system is designed, constructed and implemented. Designed with flexible characteristics suitable for use in power and machines laboratories, its purpose is to give students a hands-on learning experience on the working principles of a 3-phase Induction Motor. The system comprises the Variac for variable power supply, 3-phase 2.2 kW squirrel cage Induction Motor trainer. The trainer records and display digitally the test results. The tests carried out on the system were: no load test, load test and block rotor test. In no load test the variable voltage supply was introduced to the motor at no load while noting the corresponding current, the load test was carried out to demonstrate the effect of load on the speed and phase current of the Induction Motor. The block rotor test was carried out to ascertain the voltage of the Induction Motor when the rotor is blocked at the rated current. It also has the required measuring instruments; ammeter, voltmeter and wattmeter built in to allow for proper and effective measurement of values. The ATMEGA32 microcontroller is programmed with appropriate formulas allowing it to carry out the necessary calculations using the values gotten. It was constructed according to specification, tested and found to give reliable results on each of the above-mentioned tests performed with high efficiency.
