STABILIZATION OF CLAY SOIL FOR BUILDING CONSTRUCTION USING LIME (A CASE STUDY MODOMAWA AREA OF BIRNIN MAGAJI, ZAMFARA STATE)
Abstract
This research aimed at investigating the effect of lime in stabilizing clay soil in order to improved its physical and engineering properties. It was achieved through sampling and testing of the clay soil itself and by the addition of different percentage of lime. Natural moisture content were obtained as 10.39%, After bergs limit test shows that liquid limit is 8.13% and plastic limit show as 5.81% and the plasticity index determination is 2.32%, with reference to AASHTO classification of the soil” if plasticity index is equal to or less than liquid limit (liquid limit -30) the soil is said to be A-7-5 clay soil fair to poor, Which can be used as sub- base and in low strength required soil for fill etc. The compaction test shows that the optimum moisture content (OMC) was observed to have decrease from 5.4% to 5.73% and increased at 7.1% The maximum dry density (MDD) increased at 3%. As such stabilization of week soil can be used as specified by the federal ministry of work specification.
