IMPACT OF CONFLICT MANAGEMENT ON PERFORMANCE OF THE NIGERIAN BOTTLING COMPANY, MAIDUGURI PLANT
Abstract
This study examines the impact of conflict management on the performance of the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC), Maiduguri Plant, with a focus on identifying the types, causes, and management strategies of conflicts within the organization. Conflicts are an inherent part of organizational life, arising from various sources such as misunderstandings, task-related issues, and communication barriers. Effective conflict management is crucial for maintaining productivity, employee satisfaction, and overall organizational performance, especially in regions affected by socio-political instability, like Maiduguri. The research employed a survey design, using a structured questionnaire to gather data from 150 employees, resulting in 135 completed responses. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Findings reveal that workplace conflicts are prevalent, with misunderstandings and task-related issues being the primary causes. Conflict management strategies, including negotiation, mediation, and arbitration, have been recognized for their effectiveness in improving team performance and employee satisfaction. However, some employees perceived these strategies as inadequate, highlighting the need for improvement. The study concludes that enhancing communication practices, reviewing existing conflict management strategies, and providing regular training can improve conflict resolution and foster a positive work environment. Recommendations for NBC include implementing communication training, reviewing and refining conflict management strategies, clearly defining roles, promoting inclusivity, and establishing feedback mechanisms. The study’s implications suggest that addressing conflict management proactively can enhance organizational performance and maintain a positive and productive workplace in conflict-prone regions. Future research could explore the long-term impact of conflict management strategies and the role of external factors in shaping conflict dynamics within organizations.
