Abstract

ABSTRACT Diabetes mellitus is a condition that impairs the body's capacity to produce or utilize insulin. Long-term harm, organ failure, and dysfunction are all consequences of diabetes mellitus. Altered levels of many haematological parameters have been observed in patients with diabetes. This study assessed the anti-haematological effects of portulaca olaracea on the haematological parameters of diabetes mellitus (DM) induced rat. Twenty albino rats were divided into two groups: control group and experimental group. DM was induced with a single intra-peritoneal (ip) injection of streptozotocin (1 mg/kg). Results showed an increase in Lymphocyte count (LYM), Neutrophil count (NEU), Eosinophil percentage (EOS), and a decrease in Basophil percentage (BAS) in the control group. However, the group administered with portulaca olaracea dose extract showed significant decrease in EOS and BAS concentrations respectively. This implies a possible curative effect of the extract on some haematological parameters. The results from this study showed that portulaca olaracea extract have the potential to regulate blood level circulation of nutrients in the blood which is significant in the management of diabetes mellitus.
