Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to compare intraocular pressure readings between Contact and Non-contact Tonometry (Schiotz tonometer and Air-puff tonometer) among young adults at University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, Ebonyi state. A total number of 100 participants which include 50 male and 50 female were used for this study. Their IOP in one eye (OD) was randomly measured with contact tonometer (Schiotz tonometer) and non-contacttonometer(Air-pufftonometer)and three consecutive readings were obtained fromeachtonometryandthemeanvaluewasusedfortheanalysis. The result of the study was analyzed and presented using version 26.0 of the IBM SPSS. The result shows that IOP measured with the Air-puff tonometer was significantly higher than that measured with Schiotz tonometer (14.24±2.21vs 12.85±2.15). Gender was found not tobe associated with IOP scores in each tonometry readings. Also, age correlated positively with IOP scores in each tonometry reading. However, it was observed that therelationship in the IOP scores in each tonometry readings was significant in Schiotz tonometer (p0.05). Therefore, it is recommended that each clinic or screening centres for glaucoma should have at least the two tonometers for measuring intraocular pressure so that in the event of special cases of high IOP, the two values can be compared.
