THE ROLE OF MEDIA PRESS IN CURBING KIDNAPPING IN NIGERIA (A CASE STUDY OF PRESS IN ZAMFARA STATE)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Kidnapping has emerged as a critical security concern in Nigeria, posing significant threats to the
safety and well-being of its citizens. This research explores the pivotal role of the press in addressing
and mitigating the rampant issue of kidnapping in the country. The press, comprising traditional media
outlets and digital platforms, serves as a powerful tool for disseminating information, shaping public
opinion, and influencing government action. Through a comprehensive analysis of media reports,
government statements, and public discourse, this study examines the ways in which the press engages
with the issue of kidnapping in Zamfara State. It delves into the role of media in raising awareness,
fostering public vigilance, and advocating for effective government responses to combat kidnapping.
Additionally, the study explores the challenges faced by the press in reporting on kidnapping, such as
safety concerns for journalists and the need for responsible journalism to avoid sensationalism.
Furthermore, the research investigates the impact of media coverage on kidnappers' activities,
exploring whether increased visibility and public awareness contribute to prevention or inadvertently
fuel the problem. It assesses the effectiveness of the press in influencing public perception and shaping
the narrative surrounding kidnapping, ultimately influencing the broader societal response. The
findings of this study contribute to a nuanced understanding of the dynamics between the press and the
kidnapping crisis in Zamfara State. By identifying the strengths and limitations of media involvement,
the research aims to provide insights for policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and media
practitioners to collaboratively develop strategies that leverage the press as a proactive force in
curbing kidnapping and enhancing the overall security landscape in Zamfara State. Therefore, the
researcher adopted a quantitative and statistics data analysis using simple frequency and
percentage tables in the data presentation.
