Abstract

Medicinal plants are used to heal illnesses or reduce pain since they naturally contain active components. Spondias mombin is a tropical plant that is commonly found in the lowlands of rainforests, although it has evolved to flourish in drier environments. This has been useful in the treatment and control of neurological disorders such as epilepsy and psychosis. The study investigates the chemical composition and potential health benefits of S. mombin methanol extract using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrophotometry (GC-MS). Through spectral analysis, 20 prominent organic compounds were identified, with notable constituents including n-Hexadecanoic acid (20.18%), 9,12,15-Octadecatrienoic acid (23.81%), and Octadecanoic acid derivatives. These compounds are known for their anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and lipid-modulating properties, corroborating S. mombin's traditional use in managing infections, inflammation, and metabolic disorders. Comparative analysis with previous studies supports these bioactive compounds' therapeutic efficacy, emphasizing S. mombin’s potential as a source of natural therapeutic agents. The findings underscore the importance of further isolation, characterization, and clinical validation to optimize the application of S. mombin in pharmaceutical or nutraceutical formulations. This research provides foundational data that positions S. mombin as a promising candidate for developing plant-based treatments in managing chronic inflammatory and infectious diseases.
