THE ROLE OF MEDIA LITERACY IN DETECTING FAKE NEWS CIRCULATION ON SOCIAL MEDIA ( A CASE STUDY OF ABDU GUSAU POLYTECHNIC TALATA MAFARA ) WITH CITATION
Abstract
This study examines the critical role of media literacy in detecting and combating the circulation of fake news on social media, focusing on Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, Talata Mafara. In an era characterized by rapid information dissemination and the increasing prevalence of misinformation, media literacy emerges as a vital skill for navigating the complex media landscape. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, utilizing surveys and interviews to gather data from students and faculty regarding their awareness, understanding, and practices related to media consumption and fake news detection. The findings reveal a significant gap in media literacy among the participants, with many lacking the skills to critically evaluate the credibility of online information sources. However, those who received training in media literacy demonstrated a higher ability to identify false information and exhibited more cautious online behavior. The study highlights the need for educational institutions to incorporate comprehensive media literacy programs into their curricula to equip students with the necessary skills to discern credible information from misinformation. By fostering media literacy, the institution can contribute to a more informed and responsible student body, ultimately reducing the impact of fake news on social media. This research underscores the importance of proactive measures in enhancing media literacy as a fundamental strategy to combat the challenges posed by misinformation in today's digital age.
