EFFECT OF METHANOL EXTRACTS OF FICUS CAPENSIS (AKPURU) LEAF ON (ELECTROLYTE LEVEL, HAEMATOLOGICAL INDICES AND ANTIOXIDANT INDICES) OF CYCLOPHOSPHAMIDE INDUCE ANEMIA IN RATS
Abstract
The qualitative and quantitative phytochemical analysis of methanol extracts from Ficus capensis reveals an array of bioactive compounds with significant potential for various pharmacological applications. The presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, and tannins in moderate amounts is noteworthy. The slight presence of phenols and cardiac glycosides suggests potential bioactivity, with phenols contributing to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and cardiac glycosides possibly impacting heart health. The investigation into the toxicity of Ficus capensis extract demonstrates its overall safety, as evidenced by the absence of any fatalities even at the substantial dose of 5000mg/kg. The level of electrolytes were analyzed. There was a significant decrease in the Na+ of animals treated with Ficus capensis when compared to animals treated with blood tonic and animals with no treatment (anemic control) while animals treated with blood tonic have a significant increase against anemic control. There is a significant decrease in PCV, RBC, HB, of anemic control rats when compared to rats treated with Ficus capensis and blood tonic. The results revealed a significant decrease in WBC of rats treated with Ficus capensis and blood tonic. The result gotten from this study indicates that the plant extract was able to maintain the level of serum electrolyte. Therefore, the extract should be considered safe as a drug.
