DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A DIGITAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Nigerian universities face serious environment and health risks, leading to increasing volumes of poorly managed solid waste. In the same manner, the lack of efficient waste management systems has led to campus pollution and associated public health challenges. This project developed a Digital Solid Waste Management System (DSWMS), with a view to streamlining waste collection, segregation, and recycling, and creating a user-friendly, web-based platform that improves waste management efficiency. A mixed-methods approach was used that involved development and testing. The project deployed HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and MYSQL. 19 participants participated in the test-run of the platform. The system's usability and effectiveness were evaluated through surveys and focus groups with key stakeholders. The system facilitated real-time reporting of waste issues, encouraged active participation in the university community, and ensured compliance with environmental regulations. Results DSWMS significantly improved waste management practices. The user-friendly interface and real-time capabilities and increased participation and awareness. DSWMS serve as a model for other institutions, promoting environmental sustainability in the education sector. Keywords: Digital, Solid waste, Waste management, Environmental sustainability
