ANDROID BASED E-ATTENDANCE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS
Abstract
This project addresses the critical inefficiencies and security vulnerabilities inherent in traditional, manual attendance management systems within educational institutions. Persistent issues such as proxy attendance fraud, administrative time wastage, and data inaccuracies necessitate a technological intervention. To resolve these challenges, this project designed, implemented, and evaluated a robust, secure, and user-friendly Digital Attendance System (DAS). The system is built on a modern, decoupled client-server architecture. The backend, developed with the Django REST Framework (DRF), provides a secure and scalable API, while the frontend is a cross- platform mobile application built with React Native and Expo, ensuring accessibility on both iOS and Android devices. The core innovation of the DAS is its dual-factor validation mechanism for attendance marking. This requires students to scan a time-sensitive, unique QR code generated for each lecture session while the system simultaneously captures their real-time GPS coordinates. The backend validates this data, using the Haversine formula to ensure the student is within a predefined geofence of the classroom, thereby definitively preventing remote proxy attendance. Rigorous testing confirms that the system successfully eliminates fraud, significantly reduces administrative overhead, and provides accurate, real-time attendance data. The project delivers a cost-effective, scalable, and secure alternative to expensive biometric systems, validating the use of ubiquitous smartphone technology to enhance accountability and operational efficiency in the modern academic environment.
