APPLICATION OF HIGH-RESOLUTION FREE-AIR GRAVITY DATA FOR DEPTH CHARACTERIZATION AROUND AKAMKPA AREA, SOUTHEASTERN NIGERIA.
Abstract
The application of high-resolution free air gravity data for depth characterization around the Akamkpa Area in Southeastern Nigeria was carried out to determine the thickness of sediment that could favour the exploration of hydrocarbon. The acquired free air gravity data from the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) was interpreted by filtering and Power Spectrum techniques using the MAGMAP tool of the Oasis Montaj Software. The Power Spectrum transformed the free air data from space to the frequency (wave number) domain via the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm application to generate six Spectra analysis Blocks. The results revealed that the sediment depth value ranged from 3.6 – 5.6 Km in the Study area which indicates that the sediment thickness value is capable of accumulating hydrocarbon. The interpretation result revealed three gravity sources that resulted in the anomaly as shallow, intermediate and deep sources, with depth ranges of 0.31 to 0.32 km, 0.29 to 2.34 km, and 0.21 to 4.05 km respectively. The deeper sources are attributed to the crystalline basement, the intermediate sources are attributed to the fractured basement and the shallow sources are attributed to the overburden (sedimentary cover). For hydrogeological purposes, depths of 200 m to 300m are recommended.
