CO-OP CO-OP AND STUDENT TEAMS ACHIEVEMENT DIVISION COOPERATIVE LEARNING STRATEGIES ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN CHEMISTRY
Abstract
This study investigated the effects of co-op co-op and student teams achievement division cooperative learning strategies on students’ academic achievement in chemistry in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. Three research questions and three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. A quasi-experimental research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consisted of 1740 Senior Secondary two (SS1) Chemistry students in 16 public secondary schools 2022/2023 session in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. A Sample of 64 secondary school two students was used for the study. In each of the selected schools, one SS2 intact class was used to draw sample for the study. Simple random sampling technique was used in selecting the two schools used for the study. The Instrument used for data collection was Chemistry Achievement Test on Alkane (CATA). The instrument was validated by a chemistry lecturer and a measurement and evaluation expert in the Faculty of Education, Akwa Ibom State University. The reliability of the instrument was determined using Kuder- Richardson formula-20 and a reliability coefficient of 0.81 was obtained. The data were analysed using mean, standard deviation and independent t-test statistical tools. The findings of this study showed that there is no significant difference in the mean achievement scores of students taught the concept of alkanes using co-op co-op and student teams achievement division cooperative learning strategies. The findings also revealed that there is no significant difference in the mean achievement scores between male and female students taught the concept of organic chemistry using co-op co-op and student teams achievement division cooperative learning strategies. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that both co-op co-op and student teams achievement division cooperative learning strategies enhanced students’ academic achievement in chemistry in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. It was recommended among others that, chemistry teachers should be trained by tertiary institutions on how to design and use of innovative learning strategies like the both co-op co-op and student teams achievement division cooperative learning strategies in teaching the concepts of alkanes in chemistry.
