Abstract

The menstrual cycle is the monthly series of changes a woman’s body goes through in preparation for the possibility of pregnancy. Therefore, it is very important and essential for women to take proper care of their bodies during this delicate and critical period. Menstruation is a physiological process that involves the shedding of the uterine endometrium lining accompanied by bleeding. This monthly period is coined from the Latin word “menses” which can be translated to “the moon” (Etymology dictionary, 2018). Menstrual hygiene or health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity in relation to the menstrual cycle (Hennegan, 2021). It is also defined as the access of a female to accurate, timely and appropriate materials, facilities and information about the menstrual cycle to help promote freedom in a positive environment free from stigma and psychological distress or restraint (The Case for HER Team, 2022).
