CRITICAL EVALUATION OF ROLE OF MASS MEDIA IN EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA (A STUDY OF AFRICAN INDEPENDENT TELEVISION)
Abstract
he mass media play a pivotal role in the educational development of nations, serving as a platform
for information dissemination, public enlightenment, and lifelong learning. This study critically
evaluates the role of African Independent Television (AIT) in promoting educational development
in Nigeria. Using a combination of content analysis, audience surveys, and expert interviews, the
study explores the extent to which AIT contributes to formal and informal education through its
programming.
The research is anchored in the Development Media Theory, which emphasizes the responsibility
of media in advancing national goals, and the Uses and Gratifications Theory, which examines the
media's ability to meet the audience's educational needs. The findings reveal that while AIT has
made commendable efforts in broadcasting educational content, particularly in the areas of social
awareness, political education, and public health campaigns, several challenges persist. These
include inadequate funding, competition from new media platforms, and limited audience
engagement among younger viewers.
Despite these challenges, AIT remains a significant player in Nigeria’s educational landscape, with
potential for greater impact if it adapts to evolving media consumption patterns and leverages new
technologies. The study concludes with recommendations for enhancing AIT’s role in educational
programming, including the integration of more interactive content and strategic partnerships with
educational institutions.
