Abstract

The study explores the impact of opinion leaders in information dissemination in Nigeria, focusing on the Eruwa community. Opinion leaders, individuals who wield significant influence within communities due to their knowledge, status, or social position, play a crucial role in shaping public opinion and facilitating the flow of information. This research investigates the extent to which these leaders affect communication patterns, decision-making processes, and societal norms in Eruwa, a semi-urban town in Oyo State, Nigeria. Using a mixed-method approach, data were collected through interviews, surveys, and observational studies of community members and key opinion leaders. The findings reveal that opinion leaders in Eruwa serve as vital intermediaries between formal information sources (such as government agencies and media outlets) and the general public. They contribute significantly to shaping public perceptions of local and national issues, ranging from health campaigns to political matters. The study also highlights how trust, accessibility, and social relationships enhance the effectiveness of these leaders in influencing community behaviors. However, challenges such as the spread of misinformation and limited access to digital platforms are noted as potential drawbacks. The research concludes that opinion leaders remain essential to effective information dissemination in rural and semi-urban settings like Eruwa. Their role can be strengthened through capacity-building programs and integrating modern communication technologies to ensure accurate and timely information reaches the community.
