EFFECT OF SNATCHING CRIME (PROPERTY CRIME) AMONG RESIDENTS OF JOS NORTH, PLATEAU STATE
Abstract
This study investigates the effect of snatching crime, a form of property crime characterized by the swift theft of personal belongings, on the residents of Jos North, Plateau State, Nigeria. The prevalence of such crimes has raised significant concerns regarding public safety and community well-being in the region. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, this research combines quantitative and qualitative data to provide a comprehensive analysis of the factors contributing to the rise in snatching incidents, the experiences of victims, and the broader implications for community dynamics. Data were collected through structured questionnaires distributed to 300 residents and in-depth interviews with law enforcement officials, community leaders, and victims of snatching crimes. The findings indicate that snatching crime has increased significantly in Jos North, with reported incidents leading to heightened fear and anxiety among residents. Socio-economic factors such as poverty, unemployment, and inadequate policing were identified as primary drivers of this crime trend. The study also highlights the psychological impact on victims, who often experience trauma, loss of property, and a decreased sense of security within their neighborhoods. Furthermore, the research explores the implications of snatching crime on community cohesion and local economic activities. The erosion of trust among residents and between the community and law enforcement agencies was noted, leading to a reluctance to report crimes and engage in community activities. This study emphasizes the urgent need for collaborative efforts between the government, law enforcement, and community organizations to address the underlying causes of property crime. Recommendations include the implementation of community policing strategies, public awareness campaigns to educate residents on crime prevention, and the establishment of support systems for victims. By fostering a safer environment, this study aims to contribute to the ongoing discourse on crime prevention and community resilience in Jos North, ultimately promoting a more secure and cohesive society.
