Abstract

This study was Analysis of Daily Trust and Leadership News Coverage on Communal er heightened by inter-group suspicion and corrupt leadership at almost Every strata of the society. The major objective of this study was to determine the frequency of communal crisis stories published in the selected Nigerian newspapers, to ascertain the prominence given to communal crisis stories in the selected Nigerian newspapers and to ascertain the types (genre) of the reports (news, features and editorial) on communal crisis across the newspapers. To achieve this content categories for this study were drawn from the research questions. Relevant literature and empirical studies related to the study were reviewed as the work was anchored on agenda setting theory.Systematic sampling was used in selecting days of Daily Trust and Leadership News coverage on communal crisis in CRS. Major findings reveal that he pattern of reporting crises, conflicts and its management by the Cross-River press since the nationalistic days seems to be continuing. This is clearly shown in the press handling of the crises that engulfed in some local government in Cross River State. This kind of perception or to some extent truth against the press cannot encourage the use of the media as a means of conflict management and resolution. Rather, it has potential to turn the media into a sectional media with its attendant difficulties in managing conflicts of national magnitude. Recommendations were made which suggest that the Cross-River State journalists should engage in more affirmative reporting. They should give journalism a proper perspective, focusing on the right issues in the society. It is not just enough for the developing nations to cry that they were not adequately covered by the international press. They should scrutinize any news that come from the international media before publication and Nigerian newspapers should improve their coverage of communal crisis in Cross River with a view to accommodating victims of the crisis.
